Re: 'Industry mourns loss of Robert Bruss' (Sept. 26)

Dear Editor:

Bob Bruss was a brilliant, humble man who always made time to mentor and encourage others. Although he was usually the smartest and best-informed person on the press bus or at the industry conference, he never flaunted it. Instead, he was always asking others for their opinions; he never stopped listening and learning.

Through his column, he was a godsend to countless consumers, and he gave great advice one-on-one, too.  more...

Housing downturn has silver lining for builders

Hovnanian Enterprises last week ran a three-day "Deal of the Century" sale at its communities nationwide offering discounts of up to 30 percent on certain homes. The big New Jersey-based home builder said it generated sales of 2,100 homes -- 10 times greater than its weekly sales average over the past three months.

Ara K. Hovnanian, president and CEO of the company, said, "The high level of traffic we saw ... convinces us that there are interested buyers in the market today.  more...

Re: 'Industry mourns loss of Robert Bruss' (Sept. 26)

Dear Editor:

Bob Bruss shall be dearly missed, not only by those lucky enough to know him and call him a friend but by those hundreds of thousands whose lives are better today for his knowledge, dedication and hard work. He taught people how to make the system work, a system that can befuddle even the most expert expert. It was his gift, and he did such a wonderful job of sharing it.  more...

Re: 'Taxpayers shouldn't bail out homeowners' (Sept. 25)

Dear Editor:

Geffner's article is right on. A breath of fresh air and a voice of reason in an area where too many just want to throw money at an issue. Sooner or later people have to take responsibility for their own errors (and in many cases, greed). For the relatively small number who have been truly victimized, help should be forthcoming.  more...

Forecast calls for pain

Last week futures contracts and options based on the S&P/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index with durations of more than 12 months began trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Based on prices for contracts expiring during the next several years, investors expect deep housing-price declines to continue.

Investors expect the 10-city composite index to be down more than 8 percent by September 2008 and more than 10 percent by September 2009 before beginning a slight upturn for 2010 and 2011.  more...

Damned lies and median house prices

One of the most commonly referenced statistics in the real estate industry is the median sales price of homes. Many articles are published in newspapers the day after the National Association of Realtors releases its quarterly Metropolitan Area Existing-Home Prices report with conclusions about the healthy or unhealthy state of the local real estate market. Unfortunately the median sale price is frequently taken out of context and misinterpreted.  more...

Re: 'Broker proposes new real estate marketing platform' (Sept. 21)

Dear Editor:

In my opinion, this is nothing new. Multiple sites have attempted to do this, but the reality is these sites are only as good as the users.

Trulia, Zillow, Realtor.com and Homeseekers -- just to name a few -- are already out there.  more...

Re: 'Don't forget to ask the customer' (Sept. 11)

Dear Editor:

As a broker/owner in the real estate arena, I continue to be amazed with the closed-minded approach of "critics," as you have so kindly referred to in your article. I appreciate your real-world, real-consumer opinion, and find it a refreshing reminder to all of us that as the consumer becomes more educated we as Realtors must as well.  more...
